A new trend can be observed in the US economy. The laid off workers are taking up additional training and getting jobs elsewhere. Take for instance, Todd Sollar, who lost his job at General Motors. He enrolled at Sinclair Community College and studied robotics. He has visions of a bright future and says that with all the A’s and B’s he may soon be able to get a better job.
Sollar is not alone. There are scores of people like him who are taking up training to strat their lives afresh. The best place for these displaced workers is the community colleges. In an economy that is going through the worst recessions of its kind, the colleges are providing the much-needed lifeline to give a boost to their sagging career. Even high school graduates realize that additional skills are required for even entry-level jobs.
Even President Obama is of the opinion that the community colleges are the vital cogs in the wheel of the economic revival. The President has even placed about 1200 colleges at the focal point of an ambitious plan to encourage learning amongst the youngsters. The President hopes that a more skilled workforce will be created this way.
Sinclair Community College is the central point for such efforts. Training is given here to thousands of GM workers who have lost their jobs. The college is also coordinating with business leaders of the city and county to train people in various areas.
In fact, Sinclair’s enrolment saw a massive jump. The number of those enrolled went up by 25 per cent to 37,000 this year. This is in part due to the increasing unemployment and part because the college fees are very low. Its tuition fees are $2,000 a year. It also has a scholarship program for the deserving candidates.
Sinclair which runs 170 academic programs is a big attraction in the Montgomery County. Many students are enrolling here. They are willing to take advantage of the low fees of the college. Sinclair is now offering scholarship to students who have got C+ in school. The scholarship is $3,000. Twenty three year old Casey Benedict who took the scholarship to study manufacturing processes is now working in a Delphi plant.
Sinclair has also upgraded some of its technical courses. This has made its courses very lucrative for those who wish to join a college. This indeed spells good news for the battered spirits.
